Alex Mortimer is finance director of Sewell on the go, an independent chain of 12 fuel forecourts and convenience stores around Hull. The stores, which are open 24/7, 365 days a year, deliver a promise of quality, great value and award-winning customer service. Alex isn’t your typical finance director, as she’s also heavily involved in people and engagement activities. Culture is a priority at Sewell on the go, with the company named one of the Sunday Times Best Places to Work in 2024, and Alex helps ensure staff are passionate, enthusiastic people who go the extra mile for customers. With a background in finance and audit, Alex joined Sewell on the go in 2009, working her way up to director in 2016. She believes you can train someone to do a job, but you can’t train staff to fit a culture, so recruiting the right people is vital to help a business thrive. She also thinks staff wellbeing should be a priority, with happy staff providing better customer service and staying with the company long-term, leading to better performance for the whole company. Outside of work, when Alex isn’t spending time with her family she’s a keen netballer and treasurer of various not-for-profit organisations.
